End Child Abuse Walk Saturday at Harry Myers Park

(ROCKWALL, TX – June 4, 2015) The End Child Abuse Walk has been rescheduled June 6, 9 am, at the Harry Myers Park Pickens Lake pavilion, due to last Saturday’s thunderstorms.

The event will kick off a countywide child abuse prevention campaign, led by Rockwall-based Americans Ending Abuse, which initiated the 2011 Texas law making it illegal for parents and guardians to show porn to their children.

Registration begins at 8 am. The registration fee is $20 for adults, $15 for teens and $10 for children, 6-12. Children 5 and under are free. Families of four or more pay only $60 maximum.

Free food and water will be provided by Juice It Up, Kroger, la Madeleine French Country Cafe and McDonalds. Firehouse Bounce will provide a free children’s bounce house, climbing wall and slide.

Rockwall County Judge David Sweet, Rockwall Mayor Jim Pruitt, Rockwall County District Attorney Kenda Culpepper and Rockwall County Justice of the Peace Pct. 3 Mark Russo will be on hand to welcome walkers.

The Walk route will follow the concrete paths around the lake and through the woods. Families are encouraged to bring their children, babies in strollers and walk their dogs.

The goal of the campaign is to prevent child abuse/neglect and bring it to an end as quickly as possible, said family violence survivor J.J. Smith, founder of Rockwall-based non-profit Americans Ending Abuse, which is organizing the Walk and campaign.

“Last year there were 95 confirmed child abuse/neglect victims in Rockwall County, according to CPS,” said Smith. “We want to bring that number down to zero ASAP. The vast majority of child abuse is perpetrated by parents, step-parents and someone the child knows and trusts so we need to educate children, parents and adults.”

He said funds raised will be used to purchase a variety of educational materials from widely-praised programs such as Love and Logic and Darkness To Light to teach children, parents and adults in classes and presentations what they need to know to eliminate child abuse. Funds will also be used to purchase advertising to promote the programs, events and educational messages.
