(Wylie East High School) Fifteen students traveled to Frisco Heritage High School to participate in various Business Professionals of America competitions Saturday, Jan, 21. Five of them qualified to compete at state.
BPA is a national organization that trains members to achieve leadership and prepare for the professional world. Advisor Ted Stephens leads Raiders into the Wylie East Chapter of BPA’s inaugural year.
The results are as follows: Graphic Design Promotion –Lindsey Hutchinson, 1st place, state qualifier; Legal Office Procedures –Hannah Proctor, 2nd place, state qualifier; Web Applications Team—Hai Phan, Joshua Prince, Nicholas Bauman, Lindsey Hutchinson, 2nd place, state qualifiers; Network Design –Joshua Prince, 3rd place, state qualifier; Prepared Speech –Allison Murray, 4th place, state alternate; Interview Skills –Danial Kordi, 3rd place, state alternate, Jessica Gonzalez, 5th place, state alternate; Advanced Spreadsheet applications –Chase Nolan, 6th place, state alternate
The Graphic Design Promotion contest required contestants to create an original logo to advertise the 2013 National Leadership Conference which will be held in Orlando Florida. Wylie East senior Lindsey Hutchinson took home the gold for her logo.
“My mom is a graphic designer; I learned everything I know from her,” Hutchinson said.
Finalists (those who placed in the top six) were called to the stage to receive ranking.
“I was called up to the stage after I presented my logo for the second time (finals.) They began to name the order in which the six finalists placed. With each name called it was like a mini-heart attack, I was so worried I wouldn’t make the top two (only who qualify for state.) They called places in reverse order, once they named the second place winner and hadn’t called my name yet, I knew I was in! I looked toward Mr. Stephens with the biggest smile on my face and we nodded in acknowledgement,” Hutchinson said, “I am so excited to go to state!”
Five students received recognition in the general events as well. These general events do not advance to state but are recognized.
The results of general events are as follows: Information Technology –Daniel Llano, 1st place; Parliamentary Procedures –Allison Murray, 1st place; Business Meeting –Hannah Proctor, 2nd place, Cody Howard, 3rd place; Administrative Support –Hannah Proctor, 2nd place, Cody Howard, 3rd place, Hai Phan, 4th place; Information Technology –Cody Howard, 3rd place; Diplomat Award –Hai Phan, Allison Murray, Cody Howard, Hannah Proctor
State qualifiers will travel to Dallas Feb. 29 through March 3 to compete.
“I am very proud of our students at Wylie East,” Stephens said, “This is a huge accomplishment in our inaugural year.”
