(Rockwall) May 15, 2012 – At the final meeting of the year, volunteers Mary Hanrahan and Joan Parish were honored by the Friends of the Rockwall County Library.

Hanrahan received the Hartman Award, given annually to a to a Friends member who has performed over and above the requirements of their position and has promoted the Library and Friends beyond required activities.

The award was established in 1980 to recognize a Friends member in a special way, and named to honor Alfred and Grace Hartman.  Mr. Hartman was an early librarian and was instrumental in the organization of Friends of the Library.

Any Friends member may make a nomination, and selection is made by member’s votes.  Carolyn Duckworth, 2011 Hartman recipient, made the announcement and presentation.

A second award, also named for a former librarian, was presented to a library volunteer for services at the Rockwall County Library.  Joan Parrish received this year’s Celia Hays Award.

Much of Parrish’s time is spent maintaining the Book Alcove, the area where donated books are displayed for sale.  Sales have been brisk this past year and have generated over $5,900 income for Friends.
