September 5, 2012 – Winning with the most votes in the history of the competition, the photo of foster dog Niko by Rockwall resident Anne Haddox won the August Dog of the Month contest sponsored by Kuranda Dog Beds. But the pets at the Royse City animal shelter were the real winners.

Thanks to the victory by Anne and Niko, the Royse City shelter recently received 15 free Kuranda beds.

The national winner of each monthly contest receives five free beds from Kuranda. When Anne selected the local nonprofit Rockwall Pets to be the recipient of her donation, the organization immediately offered to match Kuranda’s donation.

Katy Isavian of Fairfax, Virginia, noticed the vigorous campaign by Rockwall Pets to solicit votes during the competition. She donated another five beds after the victory was announced.

One week before Rockwall Pets and Anne Haddox presented the donated beds to Royse City officials, Chief Carl Alsabrook and Assistant Chief Jeff Stapleton announced they had placed a moratorium on killing healthy pets at the shelter. Royse City is now poised to become America’s next No Kill shelter.

That would add Royse City and Fate to the roster of over 200 No Kill communities nationwide which are serviced by more than 50 open admission No Kill shelters. Adding to the success of Rockwall’s No Kill initiative, Royse City’s move would make all of Rockwall County a No Kill zone.

Rockwall Pets is a nonprofit rescue organization dedicated to ending the killing of healthy shelter pets nationwide. Shelter killing is the number one cause of death for healthy dogs and cats in the United States, according to the American Humane Association.

“We’re so proud to see what’s going on in Royse City,” said Rockwall Pets President Pam Kitkoski. “It’s been so rewarding to help this shelter, especially since they’re reaching for bigger and better things.” Rockwall Pets has rescued nearly 150 pets from the Royse City shelter during the past four months.

The shelter pets of Royse City are not only benefitting from the new initiatives, they’re resting comfortably on their donated Kuranda beds.
