A team comprised of predominately Heath High School players teamed with a few Rockwall High School athletes to compete in the 2013 North Texas Consolidated High School Championships on April 27 in Denton.
“This was the Super Bowl for this team as there is no state tournament for consolidated teams,” said assistant coach Jim Hummingbird. “But if there was, I would bet on these guys.”
The Heath/Rockwall team started the tournament off with a 14-10 win over Woodrow Wilson. They advanced to the semifinals where they blew out Cedar Hill/Duncanville 23-10. The finals saw them handily take care of Thunder Consolidated (non varsity players from Southlake, Grapevine and Flower Mound) 13-6. Jared Butler led the team in scoring 26 goals in 3 games.
“This team was so tight which can be difficult with players from two different high schools. When athletes pull together like this, special things can happen and this weekend is proof,” Hummingbird said.
