Love and War with the Orange Wave Band

Love and War with the Orange Wave Band

(ROCKWALL ISD – September 27, 2013) Rockwall High School’s Orange Wave Marching Band is proud to present their 2013 halftime and contest show, Love and War.

The work is written by Daniel Montoya and Rod Kosterman and features the music of Tchaikovsky, Beethoven, Barber, the Rolling Stones, Mozart and Verdi. Visual designers of the show are Scott Coulson and Terrance Jordan. The show, which is based on a Romeo and Juliet-styled story, is filled with musical romanticism as well as famous battles and war hymns.

In the preshow and part one, Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet is featured. The performance opens softly with a woodwind octet featuring Joseph Hackenbracht, Sierra Lambreth, Jonathon Molinar, Natalie Pang, Jon Phelps, Maggie Robertson, Daria Smetana and Noahie Valk. It slowly builds toward part one of the opening of the show and continues on as a race to the athletic climax of the first movement.

Part two opens with a military-style rudimental snare solo by Dan Conley and is followed by Beethoven’s Piano Sonato no 8 performed as a duet by Evan Cedor and Aidan DeMuth. The Sonato is followed by a woodwind feature of Adagio for Strings by Samuel Barber, which was used as the end sequence in the Oscar winning motion picture Platoon.

Part three begins with Paint It Black by the Rolling Stones, another Vietnam War era selection that is juxtaposed on top of the Beethoven sonata. It erupts into Verdi’s Dies Irae from his Requiem. The Dies Irae depicts the Day of Judgment when the last trumpet summons souls before the throne of God.

Part four and five is based on Mozart’s Symphony no 25, Beethoven’s Symphony no 5 and a restatement of Tchaikovsky’s overture. The show ends in a flourish of woodwinds, brass and percussion.

Drum Majors for the Orange Wave Band are Brittania Darrington, Kaan Toy and Enrico Trevisani. The group begins its contest season at the Mesquite Marching Festival on October 5th at Mesquite Memorial Stadium. The band is scheduled to march at 7:45 PM.

On October 12th the Orange Wave will travel to DeSoto to compete at the DeSoto Classic Marching Contest. They will have an afternoon performance and hopefully make finals to have a second performance that evening. The Region III UIL Marching Contest will be on October 23rd and the Orange Wave is scheduled to play at 8:30 PM.

“This is the largest RHS Band in the history of our school. We wrote this show to be fun for the kids, be entertaining to our audience each Friday night, and to compel our judges at marching contest,” said Chris Kosterman, Orange Wave Director.
