Milestone Millie Pup-Date: Patriot PAWS service dog in training learns cues, explores stores

ROCKWALL, TX – Jan. 27, 2021 – For many, the new year means time to learn new skills and develop good habits. The same goes for Milestone’s favorite pup, Millie, who is not only highly valuable as her training progresses but is also unbelievably cute. Here is a PUP-date on her track to becoming a service dog to a U.S. veteran in need, and how Milestone and Patriot PAWS support her along the way.

With the help of her devoted Patriot PAWS of Aggieland Puppy Raiser, 8-month-old white Labrador Millie is working on cues like “Come,” “Under,” “Push,” “Tug,” and “Get It.” These make up some of the 60 skills she will have under her belt (leash?) by the time she is a fully trained Patriot PAWS Service Dog. These skills aid in everyday life for veterans. For example, Millie is trained to pick up dropped items, so her future owner will never have to stress if their phone slipped unnoticed out of their hand in a busy store. By the time they start to worry about their missing phone, Millie has already grabbed it.

At her age, socialization is key to her development. To work on this and her response to these cues in public locations, Millie has been exploring a variety of stores and restaurants. From Target, Best Buy, Bass Pro, Ross, Michaels, and Lowe’s, Millie has been learning new environments around College Station. Her Puppy Raiser has reported that so far, she is a bold little puppy and has faced every new place with confidence!

Her love of work and for her person makes Millie a very attentive learner. In addition to her social cues, Millie has been developing her in-home skills. This includes using a rope tug and her nose to keep cabinets either open or closed. By learning to provide and support a safe environment for her future owner, Millie will provide invaluable service to a veteran in need.

During her training at Patriot PAWS of Aggieland, Millie works with both the Patriot PAWS staff trainers and the student volunteers at Texas A&M University. Together, they ensure she receives the training and socialization that is required to raise a top-notch service dog.

As many employees are or have direct ties to veterans, Milestone is grateful for the chance to collaborate with Patriot PAWS in financially supporting Millie’s training that will one day aid a veteran at no cost to them.
