ROCKWALL/HEATH, TX (April 28, 2025) – In a powerful display of service and community spirit, 250 volunteers from the Rockwall area came together this past weekend to build 55 beds for children in need across the DFW area. The event drew an especially strong turnout from teenagers eager to make a difference.
Working side by side, volunteers cut, sanded, assembled, branded, and finished beds—each destined for a child who previously did not have a bed of their own. Organizers emphasized that providing children with a safe, comfortable place to sleep is a crucial part of supporting their well-being and development.
The event was organized in partnership by Sleep in Heavenly Peace, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and JustServe, and was held in recognition of Child Abuse Prevention Month and Global Youth Service Day.
Among those volunteering were Stefani Thompson and her sons Ian (12) and Adan (13), and Adrienne Gift with her daughter Paige (15). For these families, the project carried deep meaning.
“A small action can have a bigger reaction. My participation taught me about service, hard work, and teamwork. That is what being Christlike looks like,” Ian shared.
Adan added, “I really enjoyed working on the beds with some of my friends. It made me appreciate the things I sometimes take for granted. Knowing that I helped give someone a bed to sleep on really makes me feel good.”
“I just kept thinking about the scripture Matthew 25:40,” said Stefani. “I even heard a few teenagers say it was fun and that we need more opportunities like this to serve. It was amazing to see so many people show up on a Saturday morning to lend a hand. Everyone deserves a bed to sleep on, and I’m so glad we could help make that happen.”
Paige and her mom expressed similar feelings.
“I was glad to help give kids something that I take for granted every day,” Paige said.
“As a mom, my heart aches knowing that some children don’t have a bed to call their own,” Adrienne shared. “I’m incredibly grateful for organizations that see these needs and step in to make a difference. It was truly an honor to help bring comfort, security, and sweet dreams to kids who deserve nothing less.”
The bed build not only addressed an urgent local need but also gave young people an opportunity to create real, lasting change during Global Youth Service Day.
