(ROCKWALL – October 13, 2013) Registration is underway for the Christian Corneau “Go the Distance” Memorial Run, set for 8 a.m. Saturday, November 16 at the JER Chilton YMCA at Rockwall, 1210 N. Goliad St.
The sixth annual event honors the memory of Christian Corneau, son of Max and Michelle Corneau of Rockwall. Proceeds benefit the Y’s Annual Campaign, which helps fund scholarships for children and families who cannot otherwise afford to participate in YMCA programs. As active members of the Y, the Corneau’s have earmarked this year’s proceeds specifically for Angel Camp, the YMCA’s day camp program for youth ages 5 to 18 with special needs.
The event will include a one mile Fun Run and a 5K Run. Online sign up is available through RockwallRunningCenter.com.
Christian, 14, played trumpet in the Orange Wave Marching Band, was enrolled in the Gifted and Talented program and served on the Student Council. As a freshman, he was voted “Most Unique” – and for good reason. His sense of style and fashion set him apart, as did his adventurous soul and his taste in music. He played guitar, enjoyed reading, writing, running, photography, snowboarding and skateboarding. He was also a member of Boy Scout Troop 83.
“He was sensitive and caring, always concerned about the well being of others. In the short time he was alive, he lived life to the fullest – always with abundant passion. And he gave the best hugs,” said his mother, Michelle. “He had a way of holding on to you and not letting go that made you feel the sincerity of his embrace.”
Christian died on Nov. 8, 2006 after being struck by a car while skateboarding near his home.
The family cites the following quote by Maya Angelou as the way in which Christian continues to touch the lives of everyone he met: “A great soul serves everyone all the time. A great soul never dies. It brings us together again and again.”
On Nov. 16, friends, family and community members will come together again to honor Christian’s memory and “Go the Distance” to help others.
