Dallas Oilers Bantams win Oktoberfest championship

The Dallas Oilers Bantam U14 team traveled to Oklahoma City  the weekend of Oct. 1 to participate at the Bantam A level with 4 other teams: The Dallas Stars Selects (McBey), McKinney Lightning (Osterheldt), Wichita (Wells) and OKC (Shearer).

Finishing first overall in the Oklahoma City Youth Hockey Association Oktoberfest Tournament, the Oilers opened round robin play with a disappointing 4 – 2 loss to the McKinney team. However, that did not deter the Oilers team’s determination to win as they entered their second game against the Dallas Stars Select team where they registered a convincing 7-5 win; this after also having been defeated by the same team at the recent Labor Day Stars Select tournament in Dallas.

The team gained new confidence from their win and set their focus on the ultimate prize. They would play Wichita in their third game, the same team that had tied their game against McKinney earlier. The Oilers team displayed courage and determination yet again by taking a 2 – 0 lead and defeating Wichita 3 – 2  in a close fought battle. With wind in their sails, the team defeated the OKC team to move on as the top seed in the Championship game, a game that would be played against their arch rivals – The Dallas Stars Selects.

The team knew what they were going up against – a team that wanted revenge! The championship was a close, one goal, game to the end. The Oilers opened the scoring in the first period to take the lead, a lead they would not relinquish! The Stars Selects attempted to come back with tying goals but the Oilers knew they had to stay ahead and continued to retake the lead. This would go on for the entire game until the fifth goal was scored off a deflection from a point shot with less than 2 minutes left in the game. The Oilers set up a defensive barrier for the last minute of the game, keeping the opponent from adding a 6th attacker,  and winning the championship by a score of 5 – 4.

Congratulations to the Dallas Oilers U14 team!
